Ever been to some sort of costume party and everyone is wearing masks?

We all wear masks of one sort or another very often. We act one way or the other based on circumstances: at work, around the kids and grandkids, around friends, around family, around strangers, etc We often hide what we are feeling because we don’t want others to know if we are having pain and sorrow, joy, anger, or any other emotion. But, what about ourselves? Do we hide from ourselves behind masks of some sort? I would say yes, we fool ourselves into believing, rather pretending we fool ourselves because we know the real truth, we act like we believe something is ok, something is right, we are doing no wrong, something is not unethical business practice, and the list goes on, and on.

Sometimes those masks are as simple as smiling if we feel like crying. But, can be other behavior as well. Different people use: alcohol or drugs to mask their suffering, fancy belongings such as cars, clothing, house to mask insecurity, good deeds to hide an evil heart, bragging to cover for insecurity. The list is nearly endless. I have done a lot of these things, not all, but a lot. I suspect all have to one extent or another. But, who do we fool when we wear masks? Those that we interact with throughout the day? Sometimes, but like PT Barnum (or maybe Abraham Lincoln, depending on the source) said, “You can fool all of the people some of the time, some of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.” Some people can sometimes be obvious quickly, depending on how careful the person is with their masks. Many have been accused, in very hateful ways, repeatedly by some, in ways that they are fake, wearing a mask who are genuine. But they who make the accusations are often wearing masks themselves. Regardless of who does, or does not, realize which face is real and which is the mask, the people that do such things know the truth as well as God knowing.  The good will be proven over time, the pretenders will be seen for what they are as well.

I know that we can’t hide from God behind a mask. He sees through it, He sees through us. He knows, oh, He knows all we try to conceal. Those that are hurting, God knows. Sometimes bullies are wearing masks, acting tough and mean, but if one knew, they were dealing with some kind of pain of their own. Sometimes kids who are abused are so timid at home that they go to school and act tough to compensate. Regardless of why one wears a mask God knows who we are behind our masks.

His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins. Proverbs 5:22

For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul? Job 27:8

God also knows those who are trying to serve Him and seek Him. Christ knows our hearts better than we know them ourselves.

29 But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.
30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31 This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.
32 The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.
33 For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.

Psalms 69:29-33

All one can do is love and pray for those that hide their true nature behind masks. Ask God to work in their hearts that they be delivered from their ways. I have been the one in the mask, acting brave when I was afraid, happy when I was sad, gentle and kind when feeling angry and hateful. As I have gone through a lot of things, I finally took off the mask and took a hard look, I was not pleased with what I saw, I was bitter, angry, numb emotionally, all at the same time. I was hurt, and hurt others, somewhat like the bully, lashing out to hide his own pain. I saw my sins and I did not like what I saw. That was my true come to Jesus moment, literally.

Lord, I praise You and glorify Your name. I ask You to help me see if there are masks I am wearing and how I need to correct myself if that is so.  Help me see through masks others that need something, especially those who are suffering and need some sort of kindness in their lives or to learn about You that I may share Your grace, mercy and salvation with them. I pray You continue to work in my heart to help me better serve Christ. I also pray that You speak to the hearts of loved ones, draw them to You and help them better understand their need for You in their lives.

Amen

Thanks for the visit. I hope this helps someone else. Please, try to be a blessing to at least one other today.
